A Charitable Company focused on thought leadership and                                               governance best practice

Overview

FGRE is a not-for-profit charitable company limited by guarantee, chaired by its founder Professor John Mellor, a former Citibank Vice President, and Professor of Banking Governance and Finance.

Purpose

FGRE’s purpose is to link the experience in banking governance of senior practitioners to NEDs and chairs of global banks and their subsidiaries in bespoke seminars on governance. The ultimate aim is to raise governance standards.

To achieve this the seminars are limited to small groups (usually no more than eight), led by NEDs with hands on experience and are conducted under the Chatham House Rule of confidentiality. This is to encourage and stimulate exchange between participants, the seminar leader and a specialist, e.g. in law or regulation, with a governance perspective. They are chaired by Professor Mellor

The seminars are forward looking and focus on generic topics, addressing challenges confronting NEDs and chairs. The topics fall under three broad headings: subsidiary governance, chairmanship of subsidiaries, and main board perspectives. They are selected by Professor Mellor and the seminar leader, and are introduced by the seminar leader.

Each seminar is proceeded by a brief. Participants receive a non-attributable record of the main points of the proceedings for their review before written conclusions by the chair. The conclusions are a guide to continuing professional development.

This unique operating model fills a gap in the support currently offered to banking group NEDs and chairs, A parallel aim is to widen the talent pool of NEDs and chairs by encouraging diversity amongst candidates for NED roles.
